Mochi Tsuki Festival
Shoichi Sugiyama (r) guides a volunteer with a kine (mallet) as he pounds sweet rice into a paste at the Mochi Tsuki festival on Bainbrige Island, Washington on Saturday, January 4th, 2020. Now in its 31st year, the annual celebration is the largest festival of its kind in the country. Mochi Tsuki, or the pounding of rice to make mochi, is an important New Year’s tradition in Japanese households.
