Bainbrige Island Mochi Tsuki Festival (10/28)
Master Pounder Shoichi Sugiyama (l) is honored at the Mochi Tsuki festival on Bainbridge Island, Washington on Saturday, January 4th, 2020. In center is Clarence Moriwaki, president of the ￼Bainbridge Island Japanese American Community and Mike Okano. Now in its 31st year, the annual celebration is the largest festival of its kind in the country. Mochi Tsuki, or the pounding of rice to make mochi, is an important New Year’s tradition in Japanese households.
